There are several factors to determine how many automatic turnstiles are needed for a project.
1. Entrance width
The quantity of automatic turnstiles required is usually decided by the width of entrnace. In general, the wider the entrance, the mode turnstile gates will be needed. In some conditions, other ways such as post or rail system can be used as a substitute to fill gaps if to fill gaps if a continuous line of turnstiles is not desired.
2. Throughput and peak traffic
Throughput refers to the speed at which individuals can enter the facility, usually expressed as people per minute. Throughtput and peak traffic are another factors to indicates the quantity of automatic turnstile gates required for the entrance. Generally speaking, the throughput level will be improved if more turnstiles installed, as more passages allows more pedestrans per minute. In normal condition, if a turnstile is able to provide a throughput of 20 persons per minute, the traffic flow is effective if 20 or less persons pass throgh in any given time. It is important to calculate the hroughput at peak traffic times.
3.The response times of recognition device
The security turnstiles usually integrated with various types of access control system to customize turnstile access control systems. Thefore, read rate is also an important factor to determine the quantity of turnstile gates, as all recognition device such as card readers, biometric scanners, facial recogotion take time to process credentials; this read rate further dictates the throughput of a turnstile. For example, if a card reader takes 3 seconds to process credentials and unlock a turnstile after a card is swiped, then that 3 seconds should be accounted for when determining a turnstile’s throughput.
3. Handicap access points
In general, handicap passage is usually required for most entrances which provide
alternate entryway for those in wheelchairs, pedestrians with large lugges, or with other special accommodations needed. Thefore, handicap turnstiles should be considered when deciding the how many automatic turnstiles are need for the projects.
How to calculate the turnstile lanes for efficient traffic flow?
The equation below makes it possible to determine the most efficient number of turnstiles needed for an entrance by calculating the exact number of turnstiles needed during peak traffic (the time when entry/exit volume is the highest). This quantity of turnstiles calculated will be able to handle maximum traffic without causing any congestion.
M= The peak time period in minutes
N= Number of entrants during the peak time period
T= throughput of a certain turnstile model (in seconds per person)- including all added time for readers
L= Quantity of turnstile lanes needed
(N/M)= Total Entrants per minute
(60/T)= Entrants per turnstile per minute
The peak periodof security entrance is from 8:00AM to 9:00AM (M=60), and 2400 people entering the building (N=2400) during that time, and the turnstile provides a throughput of 3 seconds per person (T=3).
Totally 40 entrants per minute (2400 entrants/60 minutes) at the entrance. Since a person can pass through a turnstile in 3 seconds, then 20 people can pass through a turnstile per minute (60/T). As 40 people enter your facility per minute and each turnstile allows 20 entrants per minute, therefore, 2 turnstiles (L) are needed for the total amount of people.
